With China and the United States embroiled in an all-out trade war, Illinois companies are scrambling to find new overseas suppliers, even as they prepare to pass on the higher costs to their customers.<\/p>\r\n

Everything from the mundane to the practical to the exotic \u2014 washing machine parts, dining room sets, horsehair waste \u2014 is on the growing list of products that, as of Friday, are scheduled to carry a 25 percent tariff to import from China.<\/p>\r\n

While Chicago-area companies are looking to source more goods from Vietnam and other countries to avoid the fee, they warn that higher price tags \u2014 and, perhaps, a sales slowdown \u2014 may be inevitable.<\/p>\r\n

Walter E. Smithe, president of the eponymous Itasca-based furniture company<\/a> started by his grandfather in 1945, said the 25 percent tariffs raise its costs on leather upholstery, bedroom sets and dining room sets, among other furniture.<\/p>\r\n

For many Americans, President Donald Trump’s trade war may soon get very real.<\/p>\n

His administration is preparing to extend 25% tariffs to practically all Chinese imports not already hit with duties, including toys, sneakers, shirts, alarm clocks, toasters and coffeemakers. That’s roughly $300 billion worth of products on top of the $250 billion targeted earlier.<\/p>\n
