It\u2019s all about reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, re-manufacturing and recycling to create a closed-loop system that minimizes the use of resource inputs and the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions.\u00a0Products truly come \u201cfull circle\u201d from design and production phases to re-purposed uses.<\/p>\r\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hofferplastics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/iStock-1014850994-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"currency graphic\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Global Leadership<\/h2>\r\n<p>Check out the link below to the website for PACE:\u00a0the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy. <a href=\"https:\/\/pacecircular.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pacecircular.org<\/a> Hosted by the World Resource Institute, PACE is a global public and private sector collaboration, platform and project with 75 members.\u00a0\u00a0Pace helps fuel and support projects and partners in scaling up circular economy action in areas such as plastics, electronics, food and the bioeconomy.\u00a0Active projects are underway in China, Africa, ASEAN and Europe. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Kids putting garbage into plastic containers of different types\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hofferplastics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/iStock-1061688734.jpg\" alt=\"young girl recycling plastic water bottle\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>Progress In the News<\/h2>\r\n<p>Europe is leading the way toward a more circular economy, enabled by strong advancements in environmental sustainability vision, commitment, education, and legislation.\u00a0But there are many exciting initiatives happening around the globe.\u00a0Here are a few highlights:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>By 2030, all plastic\u00a0<strong>packaging in the European Union<\/strong>\u00a0market must be recyclable.\u00a0Lightweight plastic bag consumption per person must be reduced 80% by 2025 (from 2010).\u00a0Substantial reductions must also be made in single use plastics (such as straws and plastic utensils) and in microplastics.<\/li>\r\n<li>Metrics have been established locally and for the EU as a whole.\u00a0Policies and metrics are in place for other areas including Hazardous Waste, Batteries, Vehicles, Electric Equipment, Radioactive Waste, Sewage, Cargo\/Shipping, and Landfills.<\/li>\r\n<li>By 2029, 90% of all\u00a0<strong>European Union plastic bottles<\/strong>\u00a0must be collected, and must contain at least 25% recycled plastic (increasing to 30% by 2030).<\/li>\r\n<li>Products such as baby wipes, drinking cups and sanitary products must carry instruction labels for disposal.<\/li>\r\n<li>A <strong>\u201cPolluter Pays\u201d<\/strong> policy\u00a0will hold producers financially accountable for the cost of waste management, cleanup, data gathering, and awareness raising for products such as balloons, bottles, cups and tobacco filters.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>McDonald\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0is now using a new paper straw in Europe and has implemented a toy take-back program for items included in \u201cHappy Meals\u201d boxes.\u00a0The company is testing wooden and paper spoons and edible cups made from waffles for its ice cream products, along with reuseable\/returnable coffee cups in Germany.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Sodexho,<\/strong>\u00a0one of the world\u2019s largest food service companies, has committed to cutting its food waste in half by 2025.\u00a0Executive incentives are tied to this goal, and the company will pay a hefty interest increase on its $1.45 Billion credit instrument if the goal isn\u2019t met.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Italy<\/strong>\u00a0recently became the first country in the world to institute mandatory courses on climate change in all of its schools.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Pakistan<\/strong> has expanded its ban on lightweight plastic bags throughout the country, with stiff fines levied for non-compliance.\u00a0Countries in Africa such as Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda have done the same.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>(Sources:\u00a0European Commission;
